How to solve an abstract reasoning matrix

A useful matrix-solving habit is to describe the change before choosing an answer. Track one property at a time, then test your proposed rule against every completed part of the grid.
Make an inventory before inventing a rule
Look for count, shape, position, fill and orientation. A row might change only one property while another stays fixed. If you mentally combine all of them at once, a plausible-looking answer can distract you from a simpler rule.
For an original example, imagine this count-only matrix:
- Row one: 1 dot, 2 dots, 3 dots.
- Row two: 2 dots, 3 dots, 5 dots.
- Row three: 3 dots, 1 dot, a missing cell.
Within each completed row, the third count is the sum of the first two. Applying the same rule gives 4 dots for the missing cell. “Add one across the row” happens to fit row one, but fails row two. That failure is the reason to reject it.
Check whether order matters
Some puzzles combine two cells. Others transform an object in sequence. In a rotation example, an arrow pointing up, right, down and left turns 90 degrees clockwise at each step. A reflection rule would behave differently. Label directions explicitly instead of relying on a vague impression that something has turned.
If position changes too, make a separate note for it. A clockwise rotation does not automatically explain why an object moves from the top left to the bottom right. A good rule accounts for all the relevant properties without adding exceptions just to fit an option.
Predict, then inspect the choices
Write a prediction such as “four filled circles in the lower half.” Check the answer options against each part of that prediction. If no option fits, return to the rule. Do not silently change the rule after seeing an attractive answer.
Some short sequences admit more than one mathematical continuation. In a well-specified practice question, the intended rule should also fit the supplied constraints and distinguish one option. If you can demonstrate a second equally valid answer, that is a question-quality issue worth examining.
